Bus & Coach (Public Service Vehicle) Driving in partnership with Irish School of Motoring

OVERVIEW

This programme is designed to provide the passenger transport industry with personnel who are skilled drivers of Class D (Bus/Coach) category Public Service Vehicles. Learners will also complete their Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) and obtain their Driver Tacograph cards.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A good command of the English language is required in order to successfully complete the course. Applicants must be in possession of a valid, full Class ‘B’ Driving Licence and a Class ‘D’ Learner permit. Some Class B Category Driving experience desirable.

Learners must have the following, as a minimum:
  • Good spatial aptitude.
  • Good hand/eye co-ordination.
  • Good manual dexterity skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of this programme learners will be able to:
DRIVING BUS – CATEGORY D LPSV’s
  • Identify and operate all control devices on the Bus – LPSV
  • Comply with EU regulations for tachographs relating to LPSV’s
  • Read and interpret information from road maps
  • Drive the vehicle to D licence level in accordance with the standard set by the Department of Environment
CPC – CATEGORY D LPSV’S
  • Enhance and develop eco driving techniques for LPSV’s
  • Minimise the risk in the operation of LPSV’s
  • Identify the Health and Safety Issues that affect drivers and passengers in LPSV’s
  • Identify the issues that enable the driver of LPSV’s provide excellent customer care and knowledge of the EU driver hours regulations.
  • Understand the forces that affect passengers in LPSV’s and the effect that harsh braking/acceleration/cornering can have on them.
  • Appreciate the importance of the safety and comfort of passengers while embarking/disembarking and being transported in an LPSV.
DIGITAL TACHOGRAPH FOR LPSV’S
  • Understand the EU directive and regulations that govern the fitting/operation of the digital tachograph.
  • Convert local time to universal time coordinated (UTC)
  • Understand the procedure to be followed in the insertion of the driver’s card into the vehicle unit.
  • Understand the operational principles and features of the digital tachograph vehicle unit.
  • Understand how to interpret the digital tachograph driver’s card printout.
  • Understand the procedures necessary that enable manual entries on to the driver’s card.
  • Know how to download data from the vehicle unit and drivers card.
  • Possess a detailed knowledge of the faults and events recorded on the digital tachograph vehicle unit and drivers’ card and have the ability to analyse same.
  • Identify the digital tachograph company, workshop, control and drivers card.
FURTHER DETAILS

Both a full current class B and a current provisional Class D Driving Licence are entry requirements for this course.
